Er… when you say “FB friends”, I’m left scratching my head. They don’t sound very friendly.

I have it on good authority that Gawd’s new Chosen People are atheists. That must be why we’re always getting beat up on the playground.

Unfortunately, these none native immigrants that now occupy Israel are stealing land and resources that were legitimately stolen hundreds of years ago. They are oppressing and imprisoning the Palestinians while crying about being persecuted. No sir, Israel is an illegitimate occupier. Israel is a terrorist organization. This has nothing to do with being Jewish.

Civility is a very important virtue when posting anything online nowadays. For one thing, it’s rare.

On your blog, you can expect some people to be hostile to your opinions. But FB friends acting younger than 8 years old is just weird. De-friend, I say.

I use the word “friend” a little loosely here. Obviously, people are going to disagree with me, especially on something as controversial as Israel. (I think, though, that I could write “I like peanut butter” and get some flack). To my credit, I try to be civil, but sometimes it’s hard, to my discredit. Take this, for example:
@Ella– join Hamas. Sounds like you’d cuddle up with the people who cheered and danced in the streets when our nation suffered one of its worst-ever tragedies at the hands of their co-religionists. Enjoy!
On a more serious note, Ella, sorry, but you are wrong on many points. Please do some homework. Or better yet, talk to my dad. He’s a political scientist, so I have a built-in consultant. I love my dad.

Sarah, it’s rhetoric like yours that confirms my position. You obviously have no concern for the HUMANS being IMPRISONED in Palestine. Your only concern is for some idealistic religious dream. Secularization is the answer.

Hamas? I don’t support terrorists on either side of religious ideology.

@Ella,
Yeah, we all know what a fan I am of religious ideology (cough).
Sorry, but we’ll have to agree to disagree.

@Sarah,

Does it bother you that the one reliable group of support for Israel is from the Religious Right? Some of them have fairly interesting reasons for that support of Israel.

@Bob– I think religious right folks support Israel, at least in part, because they need Israel in order to bring on the second coming of Jesus. I hope it goes without saying that I support Israel for different reasons.
Also, I think some Xians think that the Jews are the chosen people and need some sort of containment for them. I’m not sure of this, though.
Does it bother you that one reliable group of *not* supporting Israel is al Qaeda?

@Sarah,

Sure, that’s nothing new to me (although the containment theory seems novel to me).

If the Religious Right became atheist, however, Israel would probably lose majority support in the US. I was wondering if you experience some intellectual (or perhaps emotional) dissonance over the fact that your “enemy” is your “friend.”

Failure to support Israel is not something that bothers me about al Qaeda. I’d prefer that their failure would extend to al Qaeda’s violent mission.

@Bob–
Yes, the issue of Xians supporting Israel, and the religious right as the “enemy of my enemy is my friend,” confronts me. People have brought it up with me before. Yes, there is cognitive dissonance, but agreeing with people I hate is is one thing when we agree for different sets of reasons. Besides, it isn’t a simple black-and-white kind of thinking.

Welcome to Gabbin' About God, sponsored by Ace Religious Supplies, where they say, “If we don't got it, it ain't holy.”

Just kidding. This is Not My God, a site for the personal aspect of atheism. I'm putting together a book with that title, having already 20 interviews lined up, but I still want to hear from more of you.
I've expanded the blog to include material not related to atheism, including rants, raves, consumer issues, curmudgeonly matters and other miscellany.
