Books:
Please see my Amazon booklist, Cogent Atheist Books, which has more details.
Richard Dawkins, God Delusion Need I say more?
Sam Harris, The End of Faith You might think these books are more of the same. They’re not. This is especially rich in material about terrorism and religion.
Christopher Hitchens, God is Not Great Why Hitch is great.
Michelle Goldberg, Kingdom Coming Do you want a Christian Taliban?
Michael Shermer, Why Darwin Matters A great book refuting so-called “intelligent design.” Take that, Mike Seaver. Dr. Shermer is inimitable in his wit and brilliance. Also see How We Believe
Ibn Warraq, Why I am Not a Muslim and Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Infidel are extremely brave books.
David Mills, Atheist Universe If you want to know what makes this book special, read this rant from an angry critic. OK, all these writers have angry reviews, but some are more telling than others.
(Audio) Letting Go of God Comedian Julia Sweeney’s monologue of how she stopped believing in god is a great narrative.
Films:
Richard Dawkins, Root of All Evil Need I say more?
Fitna This is a very scary short film about Muslim extremism.
Soldiers in the Army of God A look at what Christian extremists can do in contemporary America.
Expelled: No intelligence Allowed Comedian and speechwriter Ben Stein makes the case that academics who try to teach Intelligent Design get fired, thus ending educational freedom for us all. Be sure to check this against Expelled Exposed and Sexpelled.
Submission This is the film Theo van Gogh and Ayaan Hirsi Ali made in Holland. Because of it, an extremist murdered van Gogh and Ali has had to live under constant security.
Religulous A very funny, yet scary, movie by awesome comedian Bill Maher. I believe this is the first mainstream movie explicitly criticizing religion, at least in the U.S.
Websites:
www.skeptic.com Michael Shermer, witty professional skeptologist, saves us not just from religion, but conspiracy theories, UFOs, crop circles, con games, ghosts, conspiracy theories, and lots more.
www.richarddawkins.net Except for Britney Spears, Dr. Dawkins could well be one of the most influential and controversial people of our times.
Pat Condell Q: Why do you hate faith?
A: Why do you hate reality?
Daniel Dennett’s site Secular Humanist at Tufts University.
Freedom From Religion Foundation Link to their radio podcast.
Jihad Watch and Islam Watch Here again, addressing one of the greatest challenges of our times.
American Humanist Magazine, podcast and other musts for modern values.
Freethinker From the UK, “The voice of atheism since 1881.”
The Edge The “third culture” of scientists and empirical thinkers.
Positive Atheism Many people, atheists and theists alike, see atheism as negative. Many don’t. I don’t. Also, this includes more links than at which you can shake a stick.
www.skepchick.org Rebecca Watson, who lives in Boston, is a skeptic extraordinaire. Her site is mostly aimed at women, but men can contribute, too, if they’re cool enough.
infidel.org All things atheist.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali Ali is a Somalian-born Dutch politician. Anyone scared about what religion can do should know about her. She is truly heroic.
Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers Yes, there are atheists in foxholes.
American Atheists Because my compatriots need extra help.
Secular Coalition for America News and politically-oriented site.
Alabama Atheists Blair Scott’s site. He even wrote fiction on it.
Atheists of Silicon Valley Mark Thomas geeks out for what’s right.
Council for Secular Humanism Publishes Free Inquiry magazine.
Atheist Nation A community-driven site.
Hitchens Zone Includes Hitchens’s articles and interviews, as well as lots of pictures of him smoking (shame on you for making kids think that cool people smoke). He has a blog on mirror.co.uk
The Humanist A magazine including the Rant and Reason blog.
Coming Out Godless Atheists’ stories of how they came out of the closet.
Ex-Christian.net A blog that includes the podcast Ex-Christian Monologues
Chariots of Iron Podcast on which I did an episode.
Atheist Alliance International includes the podcast Secular Nation on which I did an episode.
Apologia Podcast on which I did an episode. “A friendly forum for both theists and non-theists to come together in search of some common understanding.”
Reasonable Doubts Podcast; “Your skeptical guide to religion.”
It’s not an atheist website, but cafepress.com has some really great paraphernalia. Do a search on atheism, religion, etc. Darwin loves you!
Videos:
Richard Dawkins: An atheist’s call to arms. Don’t just not believe– do something!
Pat Condell: The trouble with Islam. Pat Condell is very funny and insightful. Here is one of my favorite videos of his.
Richard Dawkins reads his hate mail
Bill Maher’s New Rules for Religious Political Candidates It looks to be that in the U.S., being a practicing Christian is necessary to get elected, at least in most parts of the country. I think Bill Maher is very funny– if you haven’t yet, see his film Religulous.
Kirk Cameron (Mike Seaver from Growing Pains) debunks evolution….or does he?
Penn and Teller’s Bullshit episode on the Bible, in which skeptic Michael Shermer provides evidence that the big book of ancient Middle Eastern fairy tales is, well, just that. Very funny and enlightening episode.
Just kidding. This is Not My God, a site for the personal aspect of atheism. I'm putting together a book with that title, having already 20 interviews lined up, but I still want to hear from more of you.
I've expanded the blog to include material not related to atheism, but that's still the niche I'm in. It'll all be fascinating, though.
