Glad you made it out okay! This isn’t quite related to your story, but I often wonder at my own use of certain language (“Oh my God!”, “Thank God,” etc.) in the face of my own atheistic beliefs. I say/write those phrases a lot, and don’t think a thing about it. It’s just odd how language can be so disconnected from our inner actual worlds.

See, now in that situation, I would have pointed out the driver’s side window while screaming “look at that!” and grabbed the wheel and jerked really hard.

You are a model of restraint.

As to the prayer, after so many years in Catholicism as a cradle Catholic, I still find myself reciting Hail Marys when I am afraid. There is some comfort in the recitation of the familiar and its baroque language. (Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb . . .)

Smart thinking, asking him about himself. People LOVE to talk about themselves nonstop.

It reminds me of a story a friend told me…but he couldn’t call for help! He was–not making this up–stuck 45 minutes on a ski lift with an Evangelical Christian whose moral DUTY was to convert him.

He told me that’s the closest he’s ever come to murder in his life.

Yo word up,
@Emma: Don’t fret. That stuff is just part of our culture. We could just as truthfully say, “Oh, Zeus!” Even I shout “Oh, God!” Just reflexively, when, um, certain times.
@ Personal Failure: it’s like a “security blanket” for us? I don’t think I “pray” for this reason, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of atheists do, sort of like knocking wood, maybe?
@Chris: thanks. Heh heh, trapped on a ski lift. I hope at least your friend didn’t hear “I’m going to kill your people.”
Why do so many Xians believe in gun rights when they know it brings the rest of us ability to kill them for being annoying? I don’t have a gun because when my mom comes over, I don’t want to wind up on the 6:00 news.

Welcome to Gabbin' About God, sponsored by Ace Religious Supplies, where they say, “If we don't got it, it ain't holy.”

Just kidding. This is Not My God, a site for the personal aspect of atheism. I'm putting together a book with that title, having already 20 interviews lined up, but I still want to hear from more of you.
I've expanded the blog to include material not related to atheism, including rants, raves, consumer issues, curmudgeonly matters and other miscellany.
