A small example of how “Faerie stories” really aren’t for children and that, while cute, Tink is NOT a human being.

I always loved Peter Pan, but it always irked me, even as a child, how the secondary female characters are always so petty and jealous. You see the same thing in other Disney movies too–like Ariel’s sisters in The Little Mermaid or the stepsisters in Cinderella. If you’re not the main girl, you’re jealous like the unpopular girls *always* are of the beautiful prom queen. I didn’t believe that then, and I don’t believe it now.

I agree that Tink is not really a great roll model but don’t forget that it’s not just Disney movies that push bad roll models and heroes on us. Have you ever gone back and watched the old christmas specials – ‘Rudolph’ or ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’? In ‘Rudolph’, Santa is a complete jerk through-out the entire thing (this guy outlines it pretty well – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuQf4Ee1h8E ) . In ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town’ Santa is a pervert who trades his toys for the kids sitting on his lap and giving him a kiss. Children’s movies are full of this kind of thing and have been for a long time.

@Jo– you got that right. Thanks for reminding us that Tinkerbell isn’t the only one guilty of leading kids astray. (I’m being tongue-in-cheek when I say this.)
Thanks for the Santa video. I admit I never saw Santa in this context and, despite having seen the Rudolph special more than once as a kid, don’t remember any of that. Maybe I’m mis-remembering, but I think Santa actually jumped to Rudolph’s defense after Rudy was “outed” (his nose-mask fell off).
Santa with regards to atheism and religion is a whole nuther story for me. Goyish parents, you should be ashamed of yourselves!

Welcome to Gabbin' About God, sponsored by Ace Religious Supplies, where they say, “If we don't got it, it ain't holy.”

Just kidding. This is Not My God, a site for the personal aspect of atheism. I'm putting together a book with that title, having already 20 interviews lined up, but I still want to hear from more of you.
I've expanded the blog to include material not related to atheism, including rants, raves, consumer issues, curmudgeonly matters and other miscellany.
